“What theme should I choose for my baby’s nursery?”
The nursery is your baby’s first home - where they rest and begin to grow in the world - so it’s no surprise that this question is extremely common and important. It can be hard to know how to design your nursery, from picking color schemes to choosing animal or character themes, to finding everyday products you can trust. But it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
Let’s start simple:
Will you design your nursery around a unifying set of colors?
Would you rather center it on a specific animal or flower?
Or do you already have a theme in mind to build around?
Color Story Suggestions
Pinks
Pink is a great color for a newborn space. While stronger reds can feel intense, the softness of pink helps create a calmer, more welcoming environment. A pop of bright pink can be cute here and there, but we generally recommend paler pinks for a baby’s space.
Some pink color pairings we love include pink and baby blue, as seen in our Sunset Jellyfish print. This combination feels gentle and reassuring. Another option is pink and white, like our Tutu Elephant and Vintage Floral prints, where pink serves as a subtle highlight rather than the dominant color. If you like neutrals paired with pink, try our Mushroom collection.
Greens
Green is often associated with growth and healing. Much like spending time in nature, or even listening to nature sounds, green is a color that can help our nervous systems relax and feel safe.
As with most nursery spaces, softer tones tend to work best. We recommend prints like Apple Orchard, Valais Sheep, or Green Floral. Each features a deeper green base with lighter pops of color, creating balance without overstimulation.
Blues
Blue is another popular choice for newborn nurseries. While modern culture often associates blue with boys, its use in design has long applied to everyone. Blue in design evokes feelings of calm, tranquility, and rest.
You might pair blue with brighter accents like white or yellow - in which case our Sky Floral print is a great option. If you prefer cooler tones, blues paired with grays and soft blacks work beautifully in our Penguin or Goose prints.
Nature-Inspired Themes (Animals & Flowers)
Chicken & Duck
Many of us have raised chickens or ducks and know the joy of collecting eggs for the first time. Whether or not you’ve had these animals yourself, you can still invite them into your home through Milkbarn products. Chicken Print & Duck Print. Pair either of these prints with our matching Children's Books - The Little Rooster & Little Huck.
Honey Bear
Bears are a recurring character in many beloved children’s books and stories. If you’d like to design your nursery around bears, we recommend our Honey Bear print. Pair it with the sweet treat bears love most - Honeycomb - and don’t forget to add some hardworking Bumblebees to complete the theme.
Butterfly, Tulip, & Wildflower
Flowers bring beauty into our world, and they wouldn’t exist without the incredible pollinators that support them. If florals are the focus of your nursery, try our Wildflower or Tulip prints and pair them with Butterfly or Bumblebee accents.
As a special touch, with the purchase of The Butterfly Ball children’s book, you can request a packet of seeds to be sent along with it.
Cows
Moooooooooooooo. That means “I love you” in cow… I think.
Milkbarn has long been known for its cow designs, including Highland Cow and Homestead. We also introduced a new cow-inspired print in Autumn 2025, Country Toile. If cows are your thing, these prints are perfect for your little one’s nursery. Pair any of these prints with our children's book, Mr. Harvey's Barn.
Cats, Fish, & House Plants
Cats, fish, and house plants are three things many of us keep in our homes to bring peace and comfort. Find your joy. If you love any of these, our Swimming Koi, Cat, or Potted Plants prints may be just right for your space.
Specific Themes
Ocean / Nautical
If you’re dreaming of an ocean- or nautical-themed nursery, good news - Milkbarn has you covered. From Lobsters to Starfish, Seashells to Coastal Crabs, we offer a wide range of ocean-inspired prints.
If you’re drawn more to seaside activities, explore our Sailboat or Sandcastle collections. For a quieter, more elegant ocean look, our Under the Sea line is a beautiful option. These prints pair wonderfully with our ocean-centered children’s book, A Sand Story.
Farm
Whether you live on a farm or simply love the idea of one, you can bring that rustic charm into your home. Our Homestead print pairs perfectly with the book Mr. Harvey’s Barn. You might also add some fluffy Alpacas to the mix.
If organic eating is important to your family, browse our Fresh Veggies print. And if you love the timeless feel of handmade crafts, consider incorporating items from our Quilt collection.
Forest
If crashing waves or barnyard sounds aren’t your style, a forest theme might be the perfect fit. Our Forest Party print features gentle deer and woodland friends. Camping is ideal for families who love tents and sleeping under the stars, while Pinecone offers a subtle nod to nature.
All of these prints incorporate shades of green, making them perfect for a forest-inspired nursery.
Sports
Calling all sports fans! If sports are the theme of your space, consider prints like Vintage Surf or Summer Surf for lovers of waves and sunshine. If mountains and powder are more your style, our Vintage Natural Ski print is a great fit.
Vehicles
We all know someone who loves vehicles. If that’s your nursery theme, try incorporating prints like Vintage Planes, Vintage Trailers, Vintage Balloons, or Floral Bicycles to bring movement and adventure into your space.
In Conclusion
We know that preparing to welcome a baby, while being a time of extreme excitement and joy, can also be a little overwhelming. We hope that this guide is helpful as you prepare a space for your kiddos, no matter the age. We wish you all the joy in the world. Xoxo, Milkbarn
